Skimmer Design Challenge

The Skimmer Design Challenge is an activity where teams were challenged to improve Collaboration skills and practice the Design Process to improve the flying distance of their skimmer flights. What is a skimmer you may ask? Well it's like a glider, only not quite because the skimmer does not have a wing span, rather a pair of cylindrical hover foils attached to its fuselage. Teams developed their skimmer models using the following materials: card stock, straw, masking tape, and paper clips.

Steps for the Design Process include:

  1. Define a Problem

  2. Generate Concepts

  3. Design a Solution

  4. Build and Test Solution

  5. Evaluate Solution

  6. Present Solution

As skimmers took flight, each team documented their test flight and made modifications to improve flight distances.
